Virginia Man-Yee Lee is the John H. Ware 3rd Endowed Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, where she investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and related neurodegenerative tauopathies and synucleinopathies. Her research integrates neuropathology, genetics, and molecular neurodegeneration to decipher how pathological protein conformations—such as tau, α-synuclein, and amyloid-β—drive disease progression. Recent breakthroughs include identifying sex- and ancestry-specific effects of apolipoprotein E on Alzheimer’s pathology, demonstrating that O-GlcNAc modification forces α-synuclein into a less pathogenic amyloid strain, and uncovering dynein-dependent endo-lysosomal degradation pathways in Lewy body disorders. She has received major NIH funding for projects on tau pathogenesis and α-synuclein transmission, and collaborates extensively with leading institutions across the US, Europe, Japan, and China, including UCSF, UCL, the University of Tokyo, and the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases.
