Eric Olson is a Professor and Chair at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where he leads a research program at the intersection of cardiovascular biology, gene expression, and regenerative medicine. He earned his Ph.D. from Wake Forest University in 1981. His recent work has uncovered mechanisms of coactivator condensation driving cardiovascular cell lineage specification, defined the PD-1–PD-L1 pathway’s role in neonatal heart regeneration, and applied base editing to correct hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in human cardiomyocytes and humanized mice. His investigations also extend to cancer cachexia-induced muscle atrophy and rhabdomyosarcoma pathogenesis. Olson maintains extensive international collaborations across the US, Europe, Japan, and Australia, and his contributions have been supported by major instrumentation awards, including a 1996 system for 3D confocal microscopy.
