Tonda Hughes is the Henrik H. Bendixen Professor of International Nursing (in Psychiatry) at Columbia University. Her research focuses on the mental health of sexual minority women, examining hazardous drinking, minority stress, and the efficacy of LGBTQ-affirmative cognitive-behavioural therapy. Recent work includes a randomised controlled trial (Project EQuIP) targeting drinking and mental health, alongside studies on sober-curious alcohol reduction among midlife women and LGBTQ+ affirming substance use services. She also advocates for broadening academic metrics to assess LGBTQ+ health researchers' impact. Her scholarship spans post-communist European contexts and Ireland, reflecting a global public health approach to sexual and gender minority health.
