Thomas S. Hwang, M.D., is a Senior Professor at Oregon Health & Science University. His research focuses on medical optical imaging, specifically optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA) for retinal and ocular disease. His latest work includes widefield OCTA to predict subclinical neovascularization and complications in proliferative diabetic retinopathy, artificial intelligence-assisted projection-resolved OCTA (aiPR-OCTA), and biomarker activation maps for clinically explainable disease diagnosis. He has also developed novel methods for quantifying nonperfused retinal capillaries and choriocapillaris flow deficits in diabetic retinopathy. His 2025 publications appear in Progress in Retinal and Eye Research, Optics Express, Eye, IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, and the American Journal of Ophthalmology.
