Sue A. Aicher is a Professor of Chemical Physiology and Biochemistry at Oregon Health & Science University, affiliated with the Neuroscience Graduate Program and the Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences. Her research integrates cellular neurobiology, neuroanatomy, and neurophysiology to investigate neural mechanisms underlying pain, sensory processing, and neurodegeneration. Recent work focuses on corneal innervation and ocular surface biology, including sex differences in photophobic behaviors following cortical spreading depression and tear proteome biomarkers for persistent post-refractive surgery pain. She also studies remyelination-mediated neuroprotection via DLK signaling, perineuronal nets in cocaine relapse memory, and cardiac sympathetic innervation in heart failure. Her contributions include leadership in a National Eye Institute U01-funded consortium on ocular surface innervation, reflecting her translational impact in ophthalmology and neuroscience.
