Stephen David is a Professor of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, with joint appointments in the Neuroscience Graduate Program and Behavioral Neuroscience at Oregon Health & Science University. His research integrates auditory physiology, computational neuroscience, and cognitive science to investigate how neural circuits in the auditory cortex encode natural soundscapes. Recent work, published in *Nature Neuroscience* and *Current Biology*, uses convolutional neural network models to characterize encoding subspaces and demonstrates that cortical neurons integrate information within constrained, context-invariant temporal windows, with reduced responses to foreground versus background sounds. He has received NSF grants exploring mentorship networks and social dynamics in scientific knowledge transfer, reflecting his interest in bioacoustics and the structural drivers of academic research and mentorship.
