Scott A. Smith is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He earned his MD and PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Louisville, following a BS in Biology from California University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of peanut-induced anaphylaxis, structure-based design of hypoallergenic immunotherapeutics, and engineering nanoallergens to investigate cephalosporin allergy cross-reactivity. His current work includes human IgE monoclonal antibodies defining epitopes on allergens like Can f 1 and Fel d 1 . His patented peanut IgE therapeutic, licensed for clinical development, stems from earlier studies on vaccinia virus complement control proteins and heparin-binding sites.
