Scott A. Shaffer is a Professor at San Jose State University specializing in avian biology, marine ecology, and conservation biology. His research integrates biologging and telemetry to investigate the foraging behavior, movement ecology, and climate-driven habitat shifts of seabirds, including albatrosses, murres, and gulls. Recent work has identified global marine flyways for long-distance migratory seabirds, quantified the efficacy of remote marine protected areas, and examined the differential impacts of wind and waves on albatross flight performance across ocean basins. His 2025 study on a Western Gull riding in a garbage transfer truck highlights novel anthropogenic interactions. Shaffer has received NSF funding for collaborative research on predator facilitation in variable marine environments.
