Rondinelli Herculano is a Senior Professor at California State University–Northridge, where he leads research at the intersection of biomedical and biological engineering. His work centers on the design of biocompatible materials, biopolymers, and biofabrication strategies for tissue engineering and wound healing applications. Recent breakthroughs include the sustainable synthesis of poly-3-hydroxybutyrate using molasses-cultivated Escherichia coli and Burkholderia sp., the standardization of ex vivo myo-mechanical assessment in rat rectus abdominis muscle, and the application of Galleria mellonella and Tenebrio molitor for plastic biodegradation. He has also advanced smart biomaterials for immunomodulation and patient-specific therapies, published in venues such as Applied Physics Reviews and Biomaterials Advances. His international collaborations address critical gaps in biomaterial testing, including the chicken embryo chorioallantoic membrane assay.
