Ronald C. Kessler is the McNeil Family Professor of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School. He earned his B.A. from Temple University (1973) and his M.A. and Ph.D. in sociology from New York University (1975). His research focuses on the epidemiology of mental disorders, psychiatric comorbidity, suicide risk prediction, and the global burden of psychopathology, with recent work examining social network determinants of suicide attempts among U.S. Army soldiers, the prevalence and course of mental disorders in first-year university students across 18 countries, and the effectiveness of smartphone-based cognitive behavioral therapy for subthreshold depression. He directs the World Mental Health Survey Initiative, collaborating with researchers across the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Latin America. His honors include the Paul Hoch Award and an NIMH MERIT Award.
