Nicholas W. Gilpin is a Professor at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans. His research integrates behavioral neuroscience, neuropharmacology, and physiology to investigate the neurobiological mechanisms of alcohol dependence and comorbid pain. His recent work examines how chronic alcohol exposure and withdrawal alter extended amygdala signaling, specifically CRF-induced excitatory effects on dorsostriatal cholinergic interneurons, and how these changes drive anxiety-like behavior and heightened nociception. He also studies sex- and age-dependent differences in chronic inflammatory pain development and the effects of alcohol exposure following traumatic brain injury on neurobehavioral outcomes. His translational research includes evaluating pharmacotherapies such as bupropion for reducing cocaine self-administration.
