Nian Zhang is a Senior Professor at the University of the District of Columbia. Her research centers on machine learning and deep learning, with a specific focus on hyperspectral image analysis, target detection via spectral signature matching, and semantic segmentation of brain MRI scans. Recent publications include classifying land cover using hyperspectral and LiDAR data, semiconductor wafer map defect classification using convolutional neural networks, and imbalanced data classification through transfer learning and oversampling. She has received multiple National Science Foundation awards, including a $720,000 grant for developing machine learning algorithms for standoff detection of threat chemicals using active infrared backscatter hyperspectral imaging, and has led international collaborative research initiatives with China on computational intelligence systems for renewable energy applications.
