Minerva Garcia-Barrio is a Senior Professor at Morehouse School of Medicine. Her research integrates vascular biology, pharmacology, and cell biology to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying atherosclerosis, thrombosis, and cardiometabolic disease. Recent breakthroughs include demonstrating that IDOL deficiency inhibits cholesterol-rich diet-induced atherosclerosis in rabbits (2025) and identifying endothelial KLF11 as a novel protector against diabetic atherosclerosis (2024). She has also uncovered roles for PRDM16 deficiency in vascular smooth muscle cells exacerbating abdominal aortic aneurysm (2023) and myeloid BAF60a deficiency in metabolic dysregulation. Her genome-wide association meta-analysis highlighted PCSK9 as a therapeutic target for abdominal aortic aneurysm (2023), with collaborative work extending to oxalate metabolism and endometriosis.
