Michael T. Spiotto is an Associate Professor at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, specializing in radiation oncology and cancer biology. His research focuses on the intersection of radiation therapy and immunology, with particular emphasis on microbiome-derived lactate in immunosuppression and radiation resistance, lineage plasticity in adenoid cystic carcinoma, and patient-reported outcomes in oropharyngeal cancer survivors. He has led pivotal clinical trials, including a multicenter phase 3 trial comparing proton versus photon radiotherapy for oropharyngeal cancer, published in The Lancet. His work also explores artificial intelligence in image-assisted radiation oncology and radiobiology of particle therapy. He has received funding for combining nanotechnology with radiation to enhance checkpoint blockade immunotherapy in advanced prostate cancer.
