Michael S. Cohen is a Professor of Chemical Physiology and Biochemistry at Oregon Health & Science University, affiliated with the Neuroscience and Biomedical Sciences graduate programs. His research integrates biochemistry, molecular cell biology, and drug discovery to elucidate ADP-ribosylation signaling, particularly the crosstalk between ADP-ribose and ubiquitin in protein degradation cascades. Recent breakthroughs include identifying PARP7 as a therapeutic target in glioblastoma, where inhibition combined with STING agonists enhances radiation-induced immunogenicity, and characterizing PARP4-mediated PIDDosome assembly. His work also uncovered MARUbylation, a novel ester-linked ubiquitin-ADP-ribose modification, and defined reader-writer E3 ligases extending K11 polyubiquitin chains.
