Michael Pitts is a Professor of Psychology at Reed College, where he leads research at the intersection of cognitive neuroscience, visual perception, and consciousness. His work employs intracranial electroencephalography and computational modeling to isolate neural mechanisms of perceptual awareness, distinguishing conscious access from post-perceptual processes. Recent breakthroughs include adversarial testing of global neuronal workspace and integrated information theories in *Nature* (2025), and the proposal of Visual Awareness Positivity as a novel neural correlate of consciousness. He also explores crossmodal correspondences, such as shape-tasting in wine evaluation. His research has been supported by a National Science Foundation RUI grant ($235,318) and features international collaborations, including open multi-center intracranial datasets.
