Michael P. Peterson is a Professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. His research integrates cartography, geographical information science, and geovisualization to address atmospheric and environmental challenges, with a recent focus on air pollution, aerosol science, and greenhouse gas emissions. His latest work examines air pollutant emissions from the 2024 Canadian wildfires and their transboundary impacts, alongside analyses of vehicle emissions across the contiguous United States and NOx emissions from Texas coal power plants. He has also investigated sand and dust storm variability over China and greenhouse gas reduction strategies for major emitters. His research involves international collaborations with institutions in China, Austria, Australia, Belarus, the United Kingdom, Hungary, Germany, Greece, and New Zealand. He received an award for integrating computer technology and interactive learning into undergraduate environmental science curricula.
