Liz Simon is a Senior Professor at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans. Her research focuses on the physiological mechanisms of alcohol misuse and its interaction with HIV, particularly alcohol-related liver disease, neuroinflammation, and comorbid conditions. Recent work includes investigating alcohol-mediated cognitive impairment following traumatic brain injury via cortical mitochondrial dysfunction, proteomic analyses of chronic binge alcohol-induced neuroadaptations in SIV-infected macaques, and the dysregulation of adipose tissue extracellular matrix in HIV. She also examines sex and age effects on chronic inflammatory pain and health behaviors among people with HIV during COVID-19. Her interdisciplinary research integrates addiction biology, immunology, and physiology to elucidate alcohol's impact on chronic disease outcomes.
