Liz Simon is a Senior Professor at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans. Her research investigates the physiological mechanisms by which chronic alcohol misuse exacerbates comorbidities, particularly in the context of HIV infection. Her recent work employs preclinical models to examine alcohol-mediated cortical mitochondrial dysfunction and cognitive impairment following traumatic brain injury, as well as alcohol-induced neuroadaptations in the hippocampus and anterior cingulate cortex of SIV-infected macaques. She also studies alcohol's impact on skeletal muscle and adipose tissue adaptations, and conducts clinical research on alcohol misuse and health behaviors among people with HIV during the COVID-19 pandemic.
