Kalipada Pahan is a High Senior Professor at Rush University, where his research integrates neuroscience, pharmacology, and immunology to address molecular neurodegeneration. His work focuses on neuropharmacological interventions for traumatic brain injury and Alzheimer’s disease, including the therapeutic potential of food additives such as sodium benzoate and glyceryl tribenzoate, as well as L-leucine’s role in upregulating lysosomal biogenesis and autophagy to lower amyloid plaques in 5XFAD mice. He also investigates PPARα and RXRα regulation of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis genes for Batten disease therapy. His recent publications appear in the Journal of Neurochemistry and NeuroImmune Pharmacology and Therapeutics, though several earlier papers on benzoate compounds were retracted from the International Journal of Molecular Sciences.
