Joel T. Nigg is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at Oregon Health & Science University, where he directs research on developmental psychopathology. His work integrates clinical psychology, neuroscience, and genetics to characterize the etiology and heterogeneity of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and related neurodevelopmental conditions. Nigg’s current research focuses on refining the ADHD phenotype within the broader externalizing spectrum, identifying shared and distinct brain-structure alterations across internalizing and externalizing disorders via the ENIGMA consortium, and examining how gestational metabolic factors—such as kynurenine metabolites—and digital media exposure influence child temperament and ADHD risk. He also leads the Methylation, Imaging, and NeuroDevelopment (MIND) consortium, advancing epigenetic and neuroimaging approaches to developmental psychopathology. His recent publications appear in the American Journal of Psychiatry, Biological Psychiatry, and Molecular Psychiatry.
