Joe W. Gray is a Professor Emeritus of Biomedical Engineering at Oregon Health & Science University. His research focuses on breast cancer biology, tumor heterogeneity, and the molecular mechanisms driving aggressive triple-negative breast cancer, particularly through MYC deregulation and PTEN loss. His recent work integrates spatial multi-omics and interpretable computational models to connect tissue architecture with clinical outcomes, including a 2026 bioRxiv study on tumor-immune trajectory contexts and a 2025 Cell publication on grammar-encoded multicellular systems for democratized virtual cell laboratories. He also investigates urine-based genomic profiling for upper tract urothelial carcinoma risk stratification. A highly senior professor, Gray’s career bridges cancer pharmacology, cell biology, and translational oncology, with ongoing contributions to radiation effects research and computational biology.
