James McCormick is a Professor of Medicine and Renal Research Director at Oregon Health & Science University. His research integrates molecular physiology, cell signaling, and pharmacology to elucidate renal pathophysiology, with a focus on hypertension and signal transduction. Recent breakthroughs include identifying renal PIEZO2 as an essential regulator of renin (Cell, 2025) and demonstrating that SGLT2 inhibitors blunt kidney magnesium wasting in cisplatin-induced hypomagnesemia (JASN, 2025). His current work examines NKCC2 phosphorylation via the PKA–DARPP-32–PP1 pathway in hypokalemia, macula densa-specific NOS1 in ischemic acute kidney injury, and ENaC complex assembly across epithelial tissues. He also investigates ovarian hormone modulation of systolic hypertension in elastin haploinsufficient mice.
