Ive Hermans is a High Senior Professor at Johns Hopkins University. His research integrates catalysis, materials science, and chemical engineering, focusing on catalytic synthesis, catalyst preparation, and industrial catalysis. His recent work includes data-driven assessments of fluid catalytic cracking for plastic upcycling, solventless production of bio-based lactones over mixed metal oxides, and mechanistic studies of CO₂ hydrogenation to methanol using operando modulation-excitation DRIFTS. He also investigates the Hock process for phenol production from polystyrene and mass transfer during HDPE autoxidation. His research has been published in Nature Communications and the Journal of the American Chemical Society. He leads a multi-university center on chemical upcycling of waste plastics and collaborates with institutions across the US, Europe, and Asia.
