Henry M. Kuerer is a High Senior Professor at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. His research focuses on breast cancer and surgical oncology, particularly the selective omission of surgical interventions in exceptional responders to neoadjuvant therapy. He has pioneered strategies to eliminate breast surgery and sentinel lymph node biopsy in early-stage, node-negative HR+/HER2− disease, as evidenced by recent publications in JAMA Oncology and The Lancet Oncology. His work also integrates circulating tumor DNA to predict nodal burden and guide surgical planning, as demonstrated in the I-SPY2 trial. Kuerer leads international collaborations, including the OPBC-07/microNAC study, to refine axillary management and optimize de-escalation of cancer care.
