Gheath Al-Atrash is an Associate Professor in the Department of Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He earned his medical degree and completed fellowship training in hematology and oncology, focusing on transplantation medicine. His research centers on leukemia immunotherapy, cellular therapy, and the immunobiology of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, with particular emphasis on immune escape mechanisms in acute myeloid leukemia and myelodysplastic syndromes. His recent work has identified natural killer cell functional impairment as a driver of pre-malignant clone escape in early-stage myelodysplastic syndromes, and he is developing bispecific T cell engagers targeting cathepsin-G peptide/HLA complexes for AML. He has also published on the role of permissive HLA-DPB1 mismatches and post-transplant cyclophosphamide in reducing relapse in high-risk myeloid neoplasms. His translational research integrates flow cytometry-based relapse monitoring and immunological biomarkers of response to checkpoint inhibitor combinations, supported by extensive international collaborations in transplantation medicine.
