Garth R. Swanson is a Senior Professor at Rush University. His research focuses on gastroenterology, digestive diseases, and inflammatory bowel disease, with specific interests in chronobiology, gut microbes, inflammation, immunology, and gut barrier function. His latest work examines circadian rhythms' impact on gut health, including how peripheral circadian misalignment and alcohol affect intestinal barrier resiliency and microbiota. He has also investigated bidirectional effects of periodontal disease and oral dysbiosis on gut inflammation in IBD, increased intestinal permeability in alcoholic liver disease, and colonic antimicrobial peptides' role in aging-related dysbiosis. His publications appear in Gastroenterology, Gut Microbes, Journal of Crohn's and Colitis, and Clinical and Translational Gastroenterology.
