Friedrich Sommer is an Adjunct Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, where he bridges neuroscience and machine learning. His research focuses on neural computation, neuromorphic engineering, and high-dimensional computing, with recent work on neuromorphic reservoir computing, resonator networks for visual scene understanding, and residue hyperdimensional computing. Sommer’s latest publications explore hippocampal LFP contributions to spike prediction, grid cell-inspired structured vector algebra for cognitive maps, and cue-anchoring in head-direction systems. He has secured major NSF funding, including awards for lifelong learning with hyperdimensional computing and sparse structure extraction in spatiotemporal neural data, and leads international collaborations such as the US-German data-sharing initiative for computational neuroscience.
