Postdoctoral Research Scientist in the Department of Biomedical Engineering
Daniel Tavakol is a Postdoctoral Research Scientist in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Columbia University. He holds a senior professorial role and specializes in tissue engineering, organ-on-a-chip platforms, and regenerative medicine. His research integrates biomedical modeling with cell biology to investigate haematopoiesis, radiation oncology, and disease mechanisms. His latest work includes developing human iPSC-derived macrophages to study cystic fibrosis, employing diffusion models to predict cellular development and perturbation responses (Nature Methods, 2025), and engineering nanocarrier-based oral formulations for mitigating hematopoietic acute radiation syndrome (Advanced Functional Materials, 2025). He has also pioneered organ-on-chip models of cosmic radiation effects and metastatic breast cancer colonization of the bone marrow niche (PNAS, 2024), alongside cardiac tissue models revealing lupus autoantibody contributions to myocardial injury (Nature Cardiovascular Research, 2024).
