Cody Sheik is a Senior Professor at the University of Minnesota Duluth. His research integrates environmental microbiology, biogeochemistry, and metagenomics to investigate microbial ecology across aquatic and subsurface ecosystems. Recent work includes characterizing coupled organic and inorganic sulfur cycles in the terrestrial deep subsurface, identifying rare cyanobacteria driving nitrogen fixation and cyanotoxin production in harmful algal blooms, and simulating microbial energetics to reproduce ferruginous versus euxinic conditions in meromictic lakes. He also developed DiazoTIME, a metabolically-resolved reference database of nitrogen-fixing microbial genomes, and led global comparisons of surface and subsurface microbiomes revealing biodiversity gradients. His awards include a 2022 grant on climate-driven hydrological controls over vadose zone carbon and nutrient cycling.
