Apar Pataer is a Senior Professor at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. His research focuses on lung cancer and thoracic oncology, with particular emphasis on tumor biology, cancer immunotherapy, and radiation oncology. His recent work has uncovered mechanisms of tumor radioresistance, demonstrating that radiotherapy promotes cuproptosis and synergizes with cuproptosis inducers to overcome resistance (Cancer Cell, 2025). He has also identified chromosomal 3q amplicon-encoded regulators of secretory vesicles that drive secretory addiction in cancer (Journal of Clinical Investigation, 2024) and explored how proteostasis network modulation confers resistance to oncogenic KRAS inhibitors (Science, 2023). His clinical investigations include neoadjuvant immunotherapy trials in resectable non-small cell lung cancer, notably the NEOSTAR platform trial (Nature Medicine, 2023), and integrative machine learning approaches to identify treatment-specific biomarkers.
