Andras Perl is a Distinguished Professor of Medicine and a senior research leader at Upstate Medical University, where he directs investigations into the immunopathology of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). His research integrates immunology, rheumatology, and cell biology, focusing on metabolic checkpoints such as the pentose phosphate pathway and mTOR signaling that drive aberrant immune responses in autoimmune diseases. Recent breakthroughs include cell type-specific regulation of metabolic stress in inflammatory comorbidities, mechanistic insights into endosome trafficking in rheumatic diseases, and pathogenesis-directed lupus therapeutics, including the evaluation of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists for lupus nephritis. His work also advances diagnostic accuracy through novel antiphospholipid antibody detection and spectral cytometry profiling of myeloid dendritic cells in rheumatoid arthritis. Perl has published extensively in high-impact journals, including Nature Reviews Rheumatology and Autoimmunity Reviews, and maintains international collaborations spanning metabolic immunology, clinical rheumatology, and translational pharmacology.
